The Assad-regime recaptured on Saturday night all of the Assad Hospital, Panorama checkpoint, the University Campus and some other points south of the city of Deir Ezzor after they had fallen into the hands of Daesh for 8 hours.
On Saturday, Daesh launched an offensive under the banner “The Battle of Sheikh Abou Ali Al-Anbari” in an attempt to advance and seize control over the Assad-regime’s positions south Deir Ezzor to isolate brigade 137 from the security square in Al-Joura and Al-Qusour, which would facilitate the takeover of the whole city of Deir Ezzor.
The offensive was initiated by a group of Daesh members who infiltrated and stormed al-Assad Hospital and the Youth Housing in early Saturday, killing more than 20 members of the Assad forces, allied militiamen and some security guards.
“In early hours of the Daesh’s offensive, the group succeeded in gaining control over the most important positions belonging to the Assad-regime south the city of Deir Ezzor, including Panorama checkpoint, Al-Assad Hospital, Sadcop gas station, the grain silos and the University Campus ; however, the group did not succeed in securing its gains and retreated from all the previously mentioned areas after the Assad-regime mounted a counter-attack backed by heavy Russian air strikes, which conducted more than twenty five air raids on the areas which were overrun by Daesh. Mount of Thurda and Daesh-held areas in Deir Ezzor city were also targeted by Russian air strikes during the counter offensive,” a D24 correspondent said today.
He added,” Both parties have suffered fatalities in the ongoing battles. Around 40 Assad forces and allied militiamen were killed while others were captured. Daesh has suffered a casualty of 25 dead militants. The organization seized also an amount of ammo and medium weaponry in addition to a number of vehicles and BMB after clashes with Assad forces in the area of Mount Thurda, south the military airport.”
The attack on the regime’s positions south Deir Ezzor coincided with an assault on Al-Muwadafine neighbourhood of Deir Ezzor city ( under Assad-regime control), where Daesh has advanced by taking a number of positions inside the neighbourhood, including the fire-fighting building, following the detonation of a VBIED driven by a Daesh suicide bomber.
The front lines at the military airport, east the city, Hotel Furat Sham and the Ruwad hill west Deir Ezzor, have also witnessed fierce clashes between both parties, with no reports of any advances.
The curfew which was imposed in Al-Joura and Al-Qusour yesterday by Assad forces have been lifted today, and as a result life has returned to normal in these neighbourhoods.
Indiscriminatory shelling by both parties have killed three civilians, two of them lost their lives in the regime-held Al-Joura and Harasbish neighborhoods.
It should be pointed out that clashes are still ongoing in Al-Tahtouh and Al-Sinaa’ neighbourhoods of Deir Ezzor city. Assad forces have been attempting since yesterday night to recapture their positions in Mount Thurda, southeast the Deir Ezzor military airport, with no report of any gains so far.
