SDF forces take control of Conoco Gas Plant

Special:

Deir Ezzor Military Council captured the village of Khasham in northern Deir Ezzor after advancing through northwestern part of the Deir Ezzor Desert with the support of coalition aircraft.

SDF forces moved through the Conoco Gas Plant and the surrounding area in an attempt to remove any remaining pockets of Islamic State fleeing from the plant to Khasham.

Conoco gas plant is capable of producing nearly 50 million cubic feet of gas per day, producing high quality fuel. Nearly 450 tons of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is produced in the facility which is delivered by truck.

The facility is also capable of delivering fuel through domestic train lines. The facility also able to produce nearly 5000 barrels ofNatural-gas condensate a day.

Gas served as an important resource for Syria domestic power production, with 400 megawatts produced using natural gas. Nearly 40% of natural gas produced was used for power generation.

After the revolution:

Following the revolution, Free Syrian Army factions from the town Khashan took control of the surrounding oil fields and expelled regime forces in 2012.

Fighting around the facility died down until 2014 when Jabhat al-Nusra clashed with the Islamic State over the facility. After a brief trade of control, the Islamic State were able to take over the facility in mid-2014.

The Conoco gas plant remains one of the most important sources of financing for the Islamic State. The Islamic State trades much of fuel produced in the facility to Iraqi buyers or works with the Assad regime as a middleman to sell in regime held areas.

Due to the civil war gas shortages and inflated prices continue to plague civilians across Syria, with only those close to the Islamic State having significant access to fuel.
